The UTEP Miner football team has been flying under the radar in recent seasons. But the Miners have quietly been thriving on the national stage. After a heartbreaking loss to Liberty this past weekend, UTEP is now one win away from qualifying for their first-ever Division I FBS bowl game. The Miners will take on Akron in the New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 17th.
Since Conference USA disbanded after the 2014 season, UTEP has competed in the WAC (Western Athletic Conference). However, that didn’t stop them from making some noise this year. The Miners finished 7-5 overall and 4-3 in league play. They were led by junior running back Aaron Jones who rushed for 1,402 yards and 15 touchdowns on 195 carries. Jones was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-WAC.
Jones isn’t alone. Junior quarterback Ryan Metz also had a breakout season with 3,315 yards and 26 touchdown passes while completing 63% of his passes. Metz was also named C-USA Second Team All-Conference and Third Team All American by Athlon Sports Magazine.
UTEP’s success can be attributed to a number of things including a solid defense which allowed 24 points or less six times this season, great coaching by Mike Price and his staff, and an explosive offense that can score at any moment
